What If

I didn't know Kate Winslet can sing despite being excellent in acting. Nicely done, I must say. Here you go, the YouTube link and she should be featured for Colgate commercial too:

Who The Hell Is Sa Ding Ding?

Good thing is to share with your friends right. I have been listening to this album for the last few days and I like it. Didn't think this album would be so enjoying at the first place but it was a pleasant surprise to me. Let me just say that this is not your average album. Not your average poppy songs that usually get played in the radio over and over again. By the way, can someone please "kill" the Taylor Swift's You Belong With Me? It becomes so unbearable now. But this album of Sa Ding Ding titled Harmony is truly worthy of my recommendation.

Google and you should find a multi-talented singer / songwriter called Sa Ding Ding who is the first Asian artist who won the prestige BBC World Music Award 2008. The Sa Ding Ding's Wikepedia page here and her blog here.

She is truly a unique singer / song composer. Get to know her. Listen to her.

Faye Wong's Come Back Song

One of the biggest news in Chinese Music industry of 2010 is that Faye Wong, after many years of retirement from the music scene, is coming back to spice things up a little. Like the desert misses the rain, her fans over the world were so thrilled and excited over her return to the pathetic Chinese music industry, in my humble opinion.

Admittedly, I am okay with Faye Wong. I think she had some good songs over the years when she was active in Chinese music scene but that was it. I think her voice is unique - you know soft, dreamy, crispy clear and... well, my point is, sometimes I would fall asleep to her songs or her voice.

Anyway, it is good that she comes back because she did produce quality music and stuff which is what the Chinese music industry is seriously lacking now. Someone got to show the other musicians how it should be done! I expect that her come back song to be something more exciting but I am a bit disappointed really.

This song reminds me of my bed and pillow the minute it plays. It's my problem to have such high expectation? I hope her come back album is something more exciting and different.

In The Air

It's 2 weeks away from X'mas and I am just back from a holiday in Hong Kong. The X'mas is in the air so here is my favourite X'mas song to pep you up for the Yuletide!
I prefer Toni's Braxton's version better with the jazzy feel to the song but couldn't find it in you tube.

What's yours?

Christina Aguilera - Save Me From Myself

No flamboyant hairstyle.
No skimpy dress.
No excessive makeup.
No glass-shattering, ground-breaking singing style.
No shouting through the song.
No provocative lyrics.
No loud percussion.
No sluttish dance moves.
As simple as you get, as charming as you become.
Your voice is at its best in this song.
How can I not loving it?

SAVE ME FROM MYSELF
By Christina Aguilera

It's not so easy loving me
It gets so complicated
All the things you've gotta be
Everything's changing
But you're the truth
I'm amazed by all your patience
Everything I put you through

When I'm about to fall
Somehow you're always waiting
with your open arms to catch me
You're gonna save me from myself
from myself, yes
You're gonna save me from myself

My love is tainted by your touch
Cuz some guys have shown me aces
But you've got that royal flush
I know it's crazy everyday
Well tomorrow may be shaky
But you never turn away

Don't ask me why I'm crying
Cuz when I start to crumble
You know how to keep me smiling
You always save me from myself
from myself, myself
You're gonna save me from myself

I know it's hard, it's hard
But you've broken all my walls
You've been my strength, so strong

And don't ask me why I love you
It's obvious your tenderness
Is what I need to make me
a better woman to myself
to myself, myself
You're gonna save me from myself

Genesis - No Son Of Mine

I have been introducing some old songs in my blog. The thing about these songs is that at some point of my life, they brings different meaning to me. At the personal level, these songs are highly pleasurable and memorable to me: they are catchy, well-written, and kinda my type of music and most importantly, they connect me with past events whenever I listen to them.

The younger generation would not know who is Genesis and the great songs that they had produced over the years. When I first discovered Genesis was the time that I know that Phil Collins actually works in a band as well besides his highly successful career as a sole artist. Anyway, I think he is a great song composer who has great talent in telling stories and deliver powerful messages through his songs.

Anyway, this song is about broken relationship in the family. Fabulous song! I remembered I bought this cassette twice, after the first one broken and I can't get enough of the songs. I kept on listening to the this song days after days...

NO SON OF MINE
By Genesis

Well the key to my survival
Was never in much doubt
The question was how I could keep sane
Trying to find a way out

Things were never easy for me
Peace of mind was hard to find
And I needed a place where I could hide
Somewhere I could call mine

I didn't think much about it
Til it started happening all the time
Soon I was living with the fear everyday
Of what might happen that night

I couldn't stand to hear the
Crying of my mother
And I remember when
I swore that, that would be the
Last they'd see of me
And I never went home again

They say that time is a healer
And now my wounds are not the same
I rang the bell with my heart in my mouth
I had to hear what he'd say

He sat me down to talk to me
He looked me straight in the eyes

He said:

You're no son, you're no son of mine
You're no son, you're no son of mine
You walked out, you left us behind
And you're no son, no son of mine

Oh, his words how they hurt me, I'll never forget it
And as the time, it went by, I lived to regret it

You're no son, you're no son of mine
But where should I go
And what should I do
You're no son, you're no son of mine
But I came here for help, oh I came here for you

Well the years they passed so slowly
I thought about him everyday
What would I do, if we passed on the street
Would I keep running away

In and out of hiding places
Soon I'd have to face the facts
We have to sit down and talk it over
And that would mean going back

They say that time is a healer
And now my wounds are not the same
I rang that bell with my heart in my mouth
I had to hear what he'd say

He sat me down to talk to me
He looked me straight in the eyes

He said:

You're no son, you're no son of mine
You're no son, you're no son of mine
When you walked out, you left us behind
And you're no son, you're no son of mine

Oh, his words how they hurt me, I'll never forget it
And as the time, it went by, I lived to regret it

You're no son, you're no son of mine
But where should I go and what should I do
You're no son, you're no son of mine
But I came here for help, oh I was looking for you
You're no son, you're no son of mine - oh
You're no son - ha yeah, ha yeah, ha yeah, ha yeah
You're no son, you're no son of mine - oh, oh...

Sheryl Crow - Hard To Make A Stand

It is always a pleasure to listen to Sheryl Crow's songs. She is one hell of the songwriter and multi-talented. She is the testimonial to I-am-blonde-but-I-ain't-Bimbo. Her 1st and 2nd albums are so enjoyable and meaningful in comparison to the music that is sluttish, noisy, and shallow nowadays. Where artist has to dress less, expose bobbies, and act childish to get attention, she is standing there, playing her guitar and give us good entertainment with her songs.

Look at her video here. Don't you think she is a strong contender to hair shampoo commercial? See how her hair flies in the air when she swings to the music. Cool eh? Gess, I guess I really like her.

HARD TO MAKE A STAND
By Sheryl Crow

Old james dean monroe
Hands out flowers at the shop-n-go
Hopes for money but all he gets is fear
And the wind blows up his coat
And this he scribbles on a perfume note
If Im not here, then you're not here
And he says
Call me miscreation,
I am a walking celebration

And it's hard to make a stand
And it's hard to make a stand
Its hard to make a stand
Its hard to make a stand

My friend, o lawdy
Went to take care of her body
And she got shot down in the road
She looked up before she went
Said, this isn't really what I meant
And the daily news said, two with one stone
And I say
Hey there, miscreation
Bring a flower, time is wasting

Chorus

Yes it is

We got loud guitars and big suspicions
Great big guns and small ambitions
And we still argue over who is god
And I say
Hey there, miscreation
Bring a flower, time is wasting
I say
Hey there, miscreation
We all need a revelation

Sheryl Crow - A Change Would Do You Good

Old song of Sheryl Crow that I like so much. I don't know about you but for a lady who writes, sings and plays guitar brilliantly, I am pretty happy listening to her songs.

A CHANGE WOULD DO YOU GOOD

By Sheryl Crow

Ten years living in a paper bag
Feedback baby, he's a flipped out cat
He's a platinum canary, drinkin' falstaff beer
Mercedes rule, and a rented lear
Bottom feeder insincere
Prophet lo-fi pioneer
Sell the house and go to school
Get a young girlfriend, daddy's jewel

A change would do you good
A change would do you good

God's little gift is on the rag
Poster girl posing in a fashion mag
Canine, feline, Jekyll and Hyde
Wear your fake fur on the inside
Queen of south beach, aging blues
Dinner's at six, wear your cement shoes
I thought you were singing your heart out to me
Your lips were syncing and now I see

A change would do you good
A change would do you good

Chasing dragons with plastic swords
Jack off Jimmy, everybody wants more
Scully and angel on the kitchen floor
And I'm calling Buddy on the ouija board
I've been thinking 'bout catching a train
Leave my phone machine by the radar range
Hello it's me, I'm not at home
If you'd like to reach me, leave me alone

A change would do you good
A change would do you good

Hello, it's me, I'm not at home
If you'd like to reach me, leave me alone

A change would do you good
A change would do you good

Vanessa Williams - Colours Of The Wind

This has always been the song the I love so much.

COLOURS OF THE WIND
By Vanessa Williams

You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew, you never knew

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain
Can you paint with all the colours of the wind
Can you paint with all the colours of the wind

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sun sweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they're worth
The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter and my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or let the eagle tell you where he's been
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain
Can you paint with all the colours of the wind
Can you paint with all the colours of the wind

How high does the sycamore grow
If you cut it down
Then you'll never know

And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountain
We need to paint with all the colours of the wind

You can own the earth and still
All you own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colours of the wind

王力宏 Wang LeeHom - 一首簡單的歌 / A Simple Song

Talent and good look. Which one do you choose? Some people have the best of both.

I am not a big fan of Wang LeeHom but I reckon that he is one good looking fellow gifted with huge talent in music and ar... very successful music career as well.

All this while I enjoy listening to his songs from the radio, his song comes and go but one song lingers in my memory. I would say it is his best work thus far. Maybe it is the simplicity of the song or maybe it is the melody that got me hooked! Share with you here.

The Deele - Two Occasions

Don't it make you wonder who designs those dance moves? Those moves are so... amateurish, stiff, and awkward, don't you agree? I admitted I had a good laugh watching the video at first. Sorry, no offense to The Deele fans out there. Well, I am not trying to make fun of the video as it is probably a cool video to watch back in the 80's. The point is the song is just... well, so my kind of song! One of the songs that I like so much from the first time hearing it up to this very day.

Faye Wong did a cover for this song but I like this one way better. Babyface was so young back then and he was like tying to look cool and act 'older' in the video. The hair style is just so 80's. Ha!

TWO OCCASIONS
written by Babyface, Dee Bristol, Sid Johnson (1987)
performed by The Deele

A summer love is beautiful
But it's not enough
To satisfy emotions
That are shared between us
A winter love is cozy
But I need so much more
It just intensifies my wants
To have a love that endures

'Cause every time I close my eyes
I think of you
And no matter what the season is
I still love you
With all my heart
And I wanna be with you
Wherever you are

I only think of you on two occasions
That's day and night
I'd go for broke if I could be with you
Only you can make it right

An autumn love is special
At this time of the year
But when the leaves are gone
Does that love disappear
I never underestimate the new love of spring
But I'm glad to say in my heart
I know my love's lasting

'Cause every time I close my eyes
I think of you
And no matter what the season is
I still love you
With all my heart
And I wanna be with you
Wherever you are

Oleta Adams - Get Here

Not many artist can sing as good as Whitney Houston.
Not many artist can hit the high note with ease like Celine Dion.
Not many artist can sell as many album as Mariah Carey.
Not many artist is as clueless as Britney Spears (Thanks God!).
Not many artist is as superficial as Paris Hilton (Can anyone please kill her singing career for good?!)

I remember many many years ago, I heard this song in a friend's CD and immediately hooked, impressed and checked out the singer - Oleta Adams - Admas who? It was kind of hard to describe the feeling when I first heard about this song but it calmed me and at that time I kept playing it on the player over and over and over again. She does not have a big voice but listen to her singing this song over and over again is such a joy. She sings as if she is eagerly and full-heartedly waiting for her lover to get close and near. The emotion of the song just come through the music and her voice - get here if you can... I don't care how long.

All these years I have heard various versions covered by other artistes but none of them is just as good.

GET HERE
By Oleta Adams

You can reach me by railway
You can reach me by trailway
You can reach me on an airplane
You can reach me with your mind
You can reach me by caravan
Cross the desert like an Arab man
I don`t care how you get here
Just get here if you can

You can reach me by sailboat
Climb a tree and swing rope to rope
Take a sled and slide down slope
Into these arms of mine
You can jump on a speedcote
Cross the border in a blaze of hope
I don`t care how you get here
Just get here if you can

There are hills and mountains between us
Always something to get over
If I had the way
Surely you`d be closer
I need you closer

You can windsurf into my life
Take me up on a carpet ride
You can make it in a big balloon
But you`d better make it soon
You can reach me by caravan
Cross the desert like an Arab man
I don`t care how you get here
Just get here if you can

I don`t care, I don`t care
I need you right here right now
I need you right here right now right by my side yeah
I don`t care how you get here
Just get here if you can

Misia - Everything

I can't find word to describe but I just love this song so much since many many years ago. Share with you here.

I am totally clueless as to what the lyric is about but the music is just... one word - beautiful. The voice is just natural and not too powerful.

The song is called Everything.

Joanne Wong - Start From Here

I need to tell you about this album that I bought last year.

When I started this blog, I knew there and then I got to have a post about this album but I keep postponing it until now. I meant it to be the second post of this blog but somehow I just could not start. I tried a few times but I stuck in the introduction and it did not come out right.

Right now, I am taking it casually and at this very moment, I am listening to the album and working on the post wonder where it leads me to at the end.

...... I've never been the one to open up But you have always been the voice within The only one for my cold heart...... (Let's Start from Here)

Joanna Wong. What an ordinary name. It just like the average girl next door kind of name but her voice is anything but ordinary and the album is one of the best albums that I have in years. If you haven't any clue who is this girl, click here now to listen to her singing Moon River in Youtube which just blow me away.

I know that it might sound strange But you made my seasons start to change It happened so suddenly Like heaven has waited up for me...... (Lost in Paradise)

Very seldom I find an album that hooks me up immediately on the first listening and keep me playing it for the next few months without skipping any track in the album! If my memory serves me right, the albums that really did that to me are: David Tao's first self-titled and I'm okay album, AhMei's first self-titled album, Jay Chou's first self-titled album, Mariah Carey's first (Vision of love), second (Emotion), and third (Music Box) album, and er... yeah... the list can be long and that's all I can recall at the moment. It has been quite sometime now since I have this kind of addiction. It's just cool!

...... the cold and silent walls my stifled heartbeat oh it's best to leave the tv on...... (As Love Begins to Mend)

Her voice does not match her age. It is hard to connect the way she sings and her look! For a 20 year-old, she sounds like a veteran smooth jazz singer who would surely blow you away with her voice. Her voice is delicate, mellow, tender, and so smooth to listen to. She sings so effortlessly and unpretentiously. It is just impressive the way she tells the story through her songs.

The rustling leaves and the chilly midnight wind I wonder if it's your car pulling into the driveway Baby do you know what it's like to wait...... (Bada Bada)

Just when the mainstream singers are making waves and noises with entertainment headlines and spice up the image in order to sell more albums, Joanna is just low profile and let her talent / music speaks of her. Nothing complicated, just simplicity. This girl got class and style of her own that no other artist can easily emulate.

I'll be raising cattle And then some sheep Play the conga And then some sleep...... (Lost in Taipei)

What do I like in this album and which track? Well, let me see, I like every track in it! It has 2CDs: One in English and another one in Mandarin. Somehow I find the English one to my liking.

Two shadows talking but they don't make a sound Words have lost their meaning now...... (The Best Mistake I've Ever Made)

Ironically, she wasn't happy with this album despite it launched her career successfully and won her mountain of compliments from music critics and admiration from the fans. To her, the album is too commercial I read it somewhere. Go easy girl! Lot of people out there love this album. Doesn't t
hat's means something significant already?

Hey let's start running For no reason Let's start laughing Without any jokes When did we need excuses, to do what we do...... (For No Reason)

Click the above to listen to the song For No Reason at Youtube. Isn't her voice just... beautiful. I just don't know how else to describe it. It's just kind of sooth you and such a pleasant to ear. I mean you don't find her singing like Christina Aguilera whom has a great voice no doubt but when she sings live, she would strain and shout and simply show off her high pitch powerful vocal rather than singing the song. I remembered my ear bled watching her performance. No, I am not anti-Christina and she sings way better than Beyonce and Britney in my view.

Does nostalgia grow along the way Seeing your house far behind, far behind...... (Stages of Flying)

I miss home listen to this song. Feel like going home. The images of my old parents appear. That's exactly how powerful music can be sometimes. It connects with you innerly. That's what my next post is about: My home town.

The future's an illusion Don't fall for empty vows All we have is now...... (Now)

I think listening to this album it is like enjoying a cup of hot coffee with a very rich aroma. The smell of it immediately arouses you and you don't even taste it yet. It relaxes you and make you calm and be yourself. Music is just wonderful. Who would live without it?

Some folks like to get away Take a holiday from the neighborhood Hop a flight to Miami Beach or to Hollywood...... (New York State of Mind)

This song reminds me just about time I plan for an Island break. The blue, white, away from city noises, gentle sea breeze, a glass of lemonade, and Ah Chuin.
